Level and type of clinician training has an impact on implant outcome: a retrospective study

The level and type of clinician training has an impact on implant outcome. This follows from a study by Sonkar et al. (2019), in which 2048 dental implants were placed in 471 patients seen by residents from the departments of Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry.

Patients revealed high satisfaction levels with regard to zirconia dental implants: a systematic review

The patient’s perception of an implant treatment outcome plays a crucial role in implant dentistry. Arefnia et al. (2025) did a systematic literature review to assess the patient-reported outcome (PROs) in edentulous patients rehabilitated with zirconia implants. For this purpose, only controlled clinical trials published in English were included, with no restrictions on the year of publication. The final selection consisted of 12 articles.

Zirconia implants show a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 95.1%: a systematic review

Zirconia implants show a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 95.1% along with minimal short-term marginal bone loss. This is the result of the systematic literature review and meta-analysis performed by Mohseni et al. (2023). The review has particular clinical relevance, as it is currently the only paper that has analyzed studies with a 10-year follow-up in which two-piece zirconia implants were involved.

Romanos et al. (2022): "There is wear from metallic, but not ceramic dental implants at the time of insertion"

Titanium wear is gaining growing attention as a critical concern in implant dentistry, since titanium implants can release abrasion particles because of mechanical insertion (Meyer et al. 2006), which together with microbial environmental influences can trigger mucositis and peri-implantitis (Scridhar et al. 2015). Besides that, titanium, as a metal, is susceptible to corrosion, and titanium particles have consequently been found in peri-implant tissues (Olmedo et al., 2008).

High fracture rates & metallic aluminum – prejudices about zirconia implants

Periimplantitis is another important aspect addressed in the paper by Tartsch & Blatz (2022). “This inflammatory pathological condition with progressive loss of peri-implant hard and soft tissues can ultimately lead to the loss of the implant,” the authors note.

Results of the study by Prof. Dr Kohal et al. (2023): Zeramex XT successfully withstands 10 million cycles of dynamic loading and hydrothermal ageing at 85 °C

As part of an in-vitro study on the fracture strength of two-piece zirconia implants, Prof. Dr Ralf Kohal and colleagues at the Clinic for Dental Prosthetics at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg subjected 32 Zeramex XT implants with screw-retained abutments to a dynamic loading and/or hydrothermal ageing test at 85 °C in accordance with ISO 14801 in a biaxial high-temperature chewing simulator. A higher bone loss of 3 mm was simulated. The angle between the implant axis and the planned loading axis was 30 ± 2°.
