Titan galt lange Zeit als Implantatmaterial erster Wahl und zeigte sichere Langzeitergebnisse. Die Frage nach möglichen materialbedingten Risiken wie Metallunverträglichkeit blieb dabei nicht selten ausgeklammert. Inzwischen konnten mehrere Studien nachweisen, dass Titan infolge mechanischer Insertion Abriebpartikel abgibt, die zusammen mit mikrobiellen Milieueinflüssen Mucositis und Periimplantitis auslösen können. Die neue S3-Leitlinie gibt nun Empfehlungen bei Materialunverträglichkeiten.
