Professional, practice-oriented and collaborative: the Zeramex anatomy course organised in collaboration with the Department of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics at the University Clinic for Dentistry and Oral Health at the Medical University of Graz and led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Stiller and Dr. Dr. Thomas Mehnert took place on 22-23 November 2024 in the state-of-the-art facilities of the Chair of Macroscopic and Clinical Anatomy in Graz provided the interested participants with a wealth of learning experience, collegial exchange and greater confidence for their future implantology practice.

First-hand practical knowledge

The course was special for its combination of lectures on oral anatomy and hands-on training. The programme, which was put together by the renowned implantology experts and specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery Prof. Dr Dr Michael Stiller and Dr Dr Thomas Mehnert, was specially tailored to dentists working in the field of implant dentistry: the basics of anatomy, implantological procedures such as implantation in the anterior region, sinus lift and soft tissue management on human specimens as well as Q&A sessions on implantologically relevant issues were part of the course programme.

The course started on Friday with a social gathering and a tour of the old town. The culture-filled start was followed by a theoretical introduction to anatomy by Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Stiller. In addition to general implantological issues, the lecture by Prof. Stiller also focussed on implant-prosthetic planning. Prof. Stiller also presented scientific findings on osseointegration and other relevant aspects of handling zirconia implants. Several factors that need to be taken into account in the planning phase of implant therapy were also discussed. The first day of the course concluded with a joint dinner and a cosy get-together.

A presentation of the Zeramex XT implant system by Michael Wierz, Head of Sales DACH, marked the start of Saturday. The next presentation by Dr. Dr. Thomas Mehnert focused on the clinical evidence: in addition to the data from the study on 400 Zeramex XT implants with a 5-year follow-up, Dr. Dr. Thomas Mehnert presented several clinical cases in which he discussed his surgical and prosthetic approach and gave a few tips on how to use the implant system.

The rest of the day was dedicated to practical application: The participants used the hands-on training to deepen their anatomical knowledge, to perform practical implantological procedures such as implantation, sinus lift, graft surgery and soft tissue management on human specimens and to discuss implantology-related issues with Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Stiller and Dr. Dr. Thomas Mehnert. The participants particularly favoured the close supervision by the course instructors as well as the intensive learning experience in small groups.

Positive feedback from participants

The feedback from participants was very positive. They appreciated the first-class orientation in oral anatomy, the individual guidance from the course instructors during the hands-on training and the exchange with colleagues.

‘Prof. Dr. Dr. Stiller and Dr. Dr. Mehnert have put a lot of effort into providing everyone with great course content. I can recommend this course to anyone because you can practise in real life and look in detail at the complications you encounter every day. It was very nice,’ emphasised Philip Simon, specialist for oral surgery and co-owner of the Stember & Simon practice in Cologne (DE).

‘I had been curious to try out ceramic implants for a long time. And the Zeramex anatomy course gave me that opportunity. It was a wonderful experience because we were able to work on perfectly prepared specimens on which we could practise all the procedures. I am very grateful to the Zeramex team for this great opportunity,’ says Dr. Irene Impastato, dentist and owner of a dental and implantology practice in Muralto (CH).

We would like to thank the course instructors Prof. Dr. Dr. Stiller and Dr. Dr. Mehnert as well as Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Payer, Deputy Head of the Clinical Department of Oral Surgery & Orthodontics at the University Clinic for Dentistry and Oral Health, and Prof. Dr. Niels Hammer, Chair of Macroscopic and Clinical Anatomy at the Medical University of Graz, for co-organising the course.
